Documentary Arts was founded in 1985 by Alan Govenar to serve as a non-profit organization to broaden public knowledge and appreciation of the arts of different cultures in all media. Programs developed by Documentary Arts include the research and production of Film/Video, and Radio features on an array of historical and contemporary issues, as well as Books, a series of Audio recordings of important but rarely documented musical styles, Education Guides, and DVD-Rom we produced to document the more than 250 recipients of the National Heritage Fellowship, awarded annually since 1982 by the National Endowment for the Arts.
