The evolution of Rent is not a simple one. It took seven long and difficult years to take the show from its initial concept to its first public performance. But over the course of its groundbreaking twelve-year New York run, the rock opera transformed the definition of musical theater. The musical brought an ethnically diverse cast and controversial topics to a traditionally conservative medium, helping to increase the popularity of musical theater amongst the younger generation. Still today, some high schools ban the production of Rent, claiming the play's morality and controversial themes are subject to parental outrage. In actuality, set in NYC's East Village, Rent is a modern take on the classic Puccini opera La bohème. It tells the unforgettable story of a group of young artists learning to survive, falling in love, finding their voices, and living for today. This controversial play has been lauded with Tony Awards and a Pulitzer Prize, the highest national honor you can achieve for musical composition.
